Hello Tenno ! Chroma is such an amazing and complex beast and I've spent many hours wondering how to mod him, as I'm sure many of you have.

 

Since his best powers (Elemental Ward and Vex Armor) have such complex interactions with each other and with defensive mods (Vitality, Redirection, Steel Fiber etc.), I decided to do an in-depth numerical analysis of a large number of permutations using different mods and elemental combos.

 

First off a little overview :

 

1. This guide assumes that you know the basics of how Chroma's abilities work. If not then please read the following page >  http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Chroma/Abilities

2. There are several cases that have been studied, taking into consideration effects only from Elemental Ward and Vex Armor.

3. Each case takes into consideration only elements that affect armor and effective health (Electric, Cold, Heat) Yep, no Toxin.

4. Each case involves the activation of both Vex Armor and Elemental Ward (best way to do this is press 3 then press 2 and the animations will flow seamlessly and you can start shooting immediately).

5. All effective health values are considered only for the period that these 2 powers are active.

6. All related values have been color coded as follows : Shield/Electric, Armor/Cold, Health/Heat/Damage, Effective Health/Results. (Cold is actually obtained by using black, white or grey in the game, but is orange here to connect it to Armor.)

7. Formulae for all the calculations have been taken from the following pages :

8. Acronyms :

TF = Transient Fortitude
BR = Blind Rage
FE = Fleeting Expertise
NM = Narrow Minded
PC = Primed Continuity
Const. = Constitution
r = rank
Dmg = Damage
HP = Hit Points

 

9. Cases 1, 2, 3 and 4 are based on this basic framework, the empty slots being where the mods in question are placed :

IMPORTANT FACTS TO KNOW:

> Damage reduction on Chroma does not affect Shields.

> Armor only affects Health directly.

> Even with max Scorn value on Vex Armor your shields will still take the same amount of damage they were taking earlier.

> Thus rendering a Maxed Redirection or Vigor only a utility to reach the maximum value of Scorn (Armor Increase) directly without having to regen shields after 300 loss.

> It takes a loss of 400 Shields to reach the max Scorn value or max Fury value.

> Overshields losses DO NOT contribute to Vex Armor Scorn increase.

 

> Elemental Ward's buff's for Chroma and allies are % increases and not fixed number increases. > Vex Armor is a direct increase to TOTAL ARMOR and STACKS MULTIPLICATIVELY with Steel Fiber and Cold Elemental Ward (as stated on wiki, and tested from different sources)

> Quick Thinking efficiency is affected by the total Armor on Chroma and adds very large amounts of effective health to him if used along with a maxed Primed Flow. > Total Armor on Chroma is the same regardless of which ability is activated first between Elemental Ward and Vex Armor. It is actually better to activate Vex Armor first then activate Elemental Ward since the animation plays out more smoothly and both can be activated fast.

 

> The damage reduction from Chroma's powers stacks multiplicatively with Trinity's damage reduction from Blessing and the final damage reduction can be calculated by the following formula >

 

Final Damage Reduction = 1 - [(1 - DRchroma/100) * (1 - DRtrin/100)]

For example if Damage Reduction from Chroma's powers and armor is 95 % and Damage Reduction from Trinity's Blessing is 80 % then the Final Damage Reduction =1 - [(1 - 95/100) * (1 - 80/100)] = 1 - (0.05 * 0.2) = 1 - 0.01 = .99 or 99 %

ALL FORMULAE USED :

1. Damage Received = Attack Damage ÷ (1 + Net Armor/300)

2. Damage Received % = Dmg Rec/Attack Dmg x 100 = 100 / (1 + Net Armor/300)

3. Damage Reduction % = 100 - Dmg Rec %

 

4. The 3 above combined can be simply stated as > 

Damage Reduction % = 100 − (100 / (1 + Armor / 300))

 

5. Effective Health = Shields + (Health * (1 + Net Armor/300)) 

 

6. Fury % = 100% + (1.75 x Power strength %)

 

7. Effective health for Quick Thinking = Damage Reduction factor * Quick Thinking Efficiency * Energy Pool

 

8. Elemental Ward buffs for CHROMA and ALLIES are according to the following formula:

 

Added Attribute = Base Value of Attribute * Elemental Ward Buff % * Power Strength %

 

Therefore, for CHROMA ONLY (Base HP and Shields = 100, Base armor = 350) the buffs are calculated as follows:

 

For Electric/Shields = 100 * (100% /100) * (power strength% /100) = Power Strength % 

For Heat/Health = 100 * (200% /100) * (power strength% /100) = 2 * Power Strength %

For Cold/Armor = 350 * (150% /100) * (power strength% / 100) = 5.25 * Power Strength %

 

9. Total Armor on Chroma = Vex Armor increase * (Base Armor + Armor Increase from Steel Fiber + Armor Increase from COLD Elemental Ward) 

                                          = (Vex Armor multiplier * Power Strength) * [base Armor + (Base Armor * Steel fiber %) + (Base Armor * 150 % * Power Strength %)]

                                          = (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 + (350 * Steel fiber%) + (350 * 1.5 * Power Strength%)]

                                          = (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF% + (1.5* Pwr Str %))]

 

where % implies that the value is what you see in the game UI divided by 100.

 

Therefore, when 400 shields are instantly lost > 

 

Simplest formula for Chroma Armor (when both COLD Elemental Ward and Vex Armor are active) = (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF% + (1.5* Pwr Str %))]

 

Simplest formula for Chroma Armor (when NON COLD i.e., HEAT, ELECTRIC or TOXIN Elemental Ward and Vex Armor are active) = (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF%)]

 

And therefore, when 300 shields are instantly lost (due to no shield increase from Mods or NON ELECTRIC Elemental Ward) > 

 

Simplest formula for Chroma Armor (when both COLD Elemental Ward and Vex Armor are active) = 75% of (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF% + (1.5* Pwr Str %))]

= (2.625 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF% + (1.5* Pwr Str %))]

 

Simplest formula for Chroma Armor (when NON COLD or ELECTRIC i.e., HEAT or TOXIN Elemental Ward and Vex Armor are active) = 75 % of (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF%)]

(2.625 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF%)]

 

NOTE : 2.625 is 75 % of 3.5, since in some cases only 300 and not 400 shields can be lost giving only 75 % Scorn from Vex Armor, while requiring a recharge and loss of shields to a minimum of 100 only then giving 100 % Scorn from Vex Armor.

ARMOR for COLD @ 400 shields loss (100% Scorn) = (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 + (350 * Steel fiber%) + (350 * 1.5 * Power Strength%)]

= (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + Steel Fiber % + (1.5* Pwr Str %))]

 

ARMOR for ELECTRIC, HEAT, TOXIN @ 400 shields loss (100% Scorn) = (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + Steel Fiber %)]

 

ARMOR for COLD @ 300 shields loss (75% Scorn) = (2.625 * Pwr Str %) * [350 + (350 * Steel fiber%) + (350 * 1.5 * Power Strength%)]

= (2.625 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + Steel Fiber % + (1.5* Pwr Str %))]

 

ARMOR for HEAT, TOXIN @ 300 shields loss (75% Scorn) = (2.625 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + Steel Fiber %)]

Dmg Reduction % =>100 - 100 / (1 + (1225/300)) =>100 - (100 / 5.0833) => 100 - 19.672 % = 80.328 %

 

Effective Health = Shields + (Health * (1 + Net Armor/300))  = 0 + (300 x 5.0833) = 1524.99 HP (HIT POINTS)

Effective Health = Shields + (Health * (1 + Net Armor/300))  = 0 + (300 x 8.65625) = 2596.875 HP

Effective Health = Shields + (Health * (1 + Net Armor/300)) = 200 + (300 x 11.2083) = 3562.5 HP

FINAL RESULTS -

 

Order of importance for elements for tanking builds :

COLD > HEAT > ELECTRIC

 

Order of importance for mods :

Steel Fiber / Vitality > Vigor > Redirection

 

IMPORTANT NOTES:

 

1. When using COLD adding Vitality and Vigor gives slightly less Effective Health (around 2000 EHP less) than using Vitality and Steel Fiber, but gives 420 shields that can be lost to give instant max Scorn buff without having to worry about using a Sentinel with Guardian Mod to regenerate 300 shields instantly on loss. The difference is marginal, so you can choose to go for slightly more EHP with Steel Fiber or more independence from companion/reliability regarding Scorn buff with Vigor.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: The catch is that when Vex Armor is off you will have 71 % dmg reduction with Steel Fiber on and 53.8% dmg reduction without it. 

 

2. When using HEAT, ELECTRIC or TOXIN use Steel Fiber for DOUBLE the Effective Health than without.

 

3. Power Strength is a direct boost to any of these Elements and COLD Ward scales off it the best due to stacking armor multipliers.

 

4. When using COLD adding Vitality gives more Effective Health than when using HEAT, ELECTRIC or TOXIN. Meaning that Vitality scales better with COLD.

 

5. Chroma with COLD is good against ranged enemies, with HEAT being better against Infested. ELECTRIC has the lowest Effective Health in any Case, but is good for CC and damage. TOXIN will have similar Effective Health as ELECTRIC, with the disadvantage of not having instant Scorn buff but is useful for blocking builds and against Corpus.

 

6. Using Rage with any of these builds gives back energy from the loss of health, which can be continuously regenerated using a Winds of Purity Furis, channeling melee with Life Strike or via a Rejuvenation Aura. Rage works best with large health pools so it will work best with HEAT and Vitality together.

 

7. With regard to Quick Thinking and Primed Flow:

 

a. When using Quick Thinking and Primed Flow the EHP is effectively DOUBLED while using COLD, increases by a small amount when using ELECTRIC and decreases by a small amount while using HEAT, when compared to a build with the same POWER STRENGTH but using Vitality and Steel Fiber instead of QT and Primed Flow.

 

b. When using COLD it is more effective to use more Power Strength to get more EHP from Quick Thinking and Primed Flow than to use Steel Fiber.

 

c. When using ELECTRIC or HEAT it is more effective to use Steel Fiber to get more EHP from Quick Thinking and Primed Flow.

 

d. Arcane Guardian does not increase the EHP by a considerable amount.

 

Personally I'm going to use the build in Bonus Case 1 while using Cold and Bonus Case 1 - Alternate Version while using Electric and Heat that can be seen as follows:

I've done another set of testing to find out what damage is actually dealt. I took a Fusion Moa 70 lvl as a test subject, it deals fire damage which has no multipliers both to shields and health.

 

 

The steadied reflected damage from Chroma's shields is 2007 to Moa's shields and 3010 to health (if divided by 1.5 robotics modifier for electricity, it gives 2006,6666666666666666666666666667).

 

To find the approximate accuracy of the displayed damage numbers, I divided 2006,6666666666666666666666666667 by 2007 and got 99,983391463212091014781597741239 (%), which I presume is the data accuracy.

So, since the values are usually rounded to the higher value, multiplying 3010 by 0,99983391463212091014781597741239 gives 3009,5000830426839395449260920113, and dividing this number by 1,5 robotics modifier gives 2006,3333886951226263632840613409.

These numbers look more reasonable to my eyes. And since it is an x10 returned damage, 200,63333886951226263632840613409 is the shield damage/second of a fusion moa 70 lvl.

Next I multiplied by 0,99983391463212091014781597741239 the 869 damage to moa's health reflected by Chroma's health with 735 armor and received 868,85567181531307091845208437137, which then is divided by 1,5 robotics modifier, and divided by 10 of electric ward multiplier, which resulted in 57,923711454354204727896805624758. This is the damage to Chroma's health.


Calculations:
3010 / 1,5 = 2006,6666666666666666666666666667 =>
2006,6666666666666666666666666667 / 2007 = 0,99983391463212091014781597741239 =>
3010 * 0,99983391463212091014781597741239 = 3009,5000830426839395449260920113 =>
3009,5000830426839395449260920113 / 1,5 = 2006,3333886951226263632840613409 =>
2006,3333886951226263632840613409 / 10 = 200,63333886951226263632840613409

869 * 0,99983391463212091014781597741239 = 868,85567181531307091845208437137 =>
868,85567181531307091845208437137 / (1.5*10) = 57,923711454354204727896805624758 (damage to Chroma's health).

Now with 350% from Vex Armor.

314 is the steadied reflected damage health-to-health.

314 * 0,99983391463212091014781597741239 = 313,94784919448596578641421690749 =>
313,94784919448596578641421690749 / (1,5*10) = 20,929856612965731052427614460499 (damage to Chroma's health).

Results:
Fusion moa's output damage                                         = 200,63333886951226263632840613409
Damage to health with SF 110%                                    = 57,923711454354204727896805624758
Damage to health with SF 110% and Vex Armor 350% = 20,929856612965731052427614460499

I'm going to substitute these damage numbers into the formula for Damage Received and find the armor value from reverse calculations, but later.

Ok, here is what I found:

 

Damage Received = Attack Damage / (1 + Net Armor / 300) => Net Armor = (Attack Damage / Damage Received - 1) * 300

 

Without Vex Armor:

57,92~ = 200,63~ / (1 + Net Armor / 300) =>  Net Armor = (200,63~ / 57,92~ -1) * 300 = 739,1254 (armor).

 

Still not accurate enough, but close to what should be.

Now I substitute 20,92~ as the Damage Received.

 

With 350% from Vex Armor:

20,92~ = 200,63~ / (1 + Net Armor / 300) =>  Net Armor = (200,63~ / 20,92~ -1) * 300 = 2575.796 (armor)

And now I divide the greater Armor by the lesser one

 

Armor gain = 2575.796 / 739,1254 = 3,484438, which is almost 3,5 and considering how inaccurate our numbers are, it's safe to accept that this is the 3,5 (i.e. 350%) multiplier from Vex Armor.

 

Conclusion: I am 100% certain that Vex Armor is multiplicative to the (DefaultArmor + DefaultArmor*SteelFiber). This gives 735*3,5 = 2572,5 Armor under the effect of default Vex Armor. As I said before.

 

Next I'll try to somehow deduce the numbers with Cold Ward in effect.

The way damage rounding works in this game is not at all accurate. I'm halfway convinced that it just truncates displayed damage to the nearest integer. This would give you 2005.50...01-2006.99...99 damage from the Moa being reduced to 20.90..01-20.99...99 damage, of which the estimate of 2572.5 armor fits nicely between (20.945-209.61). Anyhow, definitely accurate enough to prove the conclusion.

 

Next I'll try to somehow deduce the numbers with Cold Ward in effect.

Just get hit by the lvl 70 Moa with SF installed and Cold Ward active. I'd guess you'd take 38-39 damage.

from my experience this is exactly what it does for most of the games calculations for health, armor, dmg, things that dont NEED high precision and can be fine with int (and most games really do it in a similar way for things like health). The numbers are either rounded down or truncated to the nearest integer so as to eliminate float math, So when you do calculation its safe to just lob off anything after the decimal and go with the lower nearest integer. It seems weird but from a performance perspective it makes complete sense as you want to have as little float math as possible and if you dont NEED it you may aswell eliminate it because integer operations are substantially faster and less taxing even if its just dmg calculation, and when youre doing DMG calculation on X number of units at a given time you definitely want it to be faster.

My head starts spinning. Cold Ward has some strange interaction with damage numbers. Here is the story.
I picked Mag prime with shield polarize and max. shields, and went recording damage numbers to shields.
I've recorded 3 tests and written down the values of remaining shields after each damage tick, here tey are:

Then I picked Chroma with Steel Fiber and went recording damage numbers to health.

There were several iterations for each case, but I used only 1-2 of the most clear ones. Where the numbers deviate too much from 58, 40, 21, and 13 (Without buff; Cold Ward; Vex Armor; Vex Armor + Cold Ward), it's etither the beginning/end of ray emission, or a portion of damage was absorbed by shields, which have recharged while the moa didn't shoot, or a fire proc.
When I used Cold Elemental ward, I've seen many times the numbers 207-208 (as well as 200), which were the damage reflected back to moa (didn't matter whether it was reflected from my health or shields, numbers were the same). I'll mention them later on.

Relying on my previous conclusion of how Vex Armor works and the damage numbers (Damage received) I observed today, I calculated the armor value Chroma has under Vex Armor ((BaseArmor + BaseArmor*SteelFiber)*3,5 = 2572,5) and then calculated the damage, that should be dealt to get such numbers, I'll call it the incoming damage:

(With Vex Armor) Incoming damage = Damage received * (1 + Armor / 300) = 21 * (1 + 2572,5 / 300) = 201,075
(Without buff)   Incoming damage = 58 * (1 + 735 / 300) = 200,1

Close.

Now to the Cold Ward, I presumed it is calculated by the formula Armor = BaseArmor*Ward + BaseArmor*SteelFiber = 1260 (it's a long story how I came to it, there were too many assumptions to recall), and one of those reflected numbers (208) fits perfectly into another formula:

Here I deduced the Armor value using the observed damage number under the effect of Cold Ward and the 208:

Armor with ward = (Damage(incoming) / damage(observed) -1) * 300 = (208 / 40 - 1) * 300  = exactly 1260.

Next I manually found how much damage should Chroma receive to health with 4410 armor under the effect of both Cold Ward and Vex Armor to get the observed 13 damage. All calculations were done in Excel, so I made another cell with a formula for Armor (deduced from the formula for Damage received) and begun substituting numbers starting from 200 (200, 200.1, 200.2 ... 202 and so on), aaaand

So, after extensive testing, formulas deducing, and numbers juggling, my final formulas are these (corresponding values for Cold Ward and Vex Armor affected by power strength):

Armor with Steel Fiber = BaseArmor + BaseArmor*SteelFiber = BaseArmor*(1+1,1), i.e. Armor = 350*(1+1,1) = 735;
Armor under Cold Ward and Steel Fiber = (BaseArmor + BaseArmor*SteelFiber) + BaseArmor*ColdWard = BaseArmor * (1+ColdWard + SteelFiber), i.e. Armor = 350*(1+1,5+1,1) = 1260;
Armor under Vex Armor and Steel Fiber = (BaseArmor + BaseArmor*SteelFiber)*VexArmor, i.e. Armor = 350*(1+1,1)*3,5 = 2572,5;
And armor under Cold Ward, Vex Armor, and Steel Fiber = [(BaseArmor + BaseArmor*SteelFiber) + BaseArmor*ColdWard]*VexArmor = BaseArmor*(1 + SteelFiber + ColdWard)*VexArmor, i.e. Armor = 350*(1+1,1+1,5)*3.5 = 4410.

Exactly the formulas I suggested in my very first post to this thread.

 

P.S. Also, seeing how Cold Ward reflects 208 damage to Fusion Moa (and not 600), it's safe to say that wiki is wrong in one more aspect - Cold Ward reflects 100% damage, not 300%.

This concurs with my math from your testing with the Charger. Ice Ward is adding +150% armor rather than +150 armor like the wiki is claiming. This armor increase adds to the armor from SF.

 

For emphasis:

 

TLDR / RESULTS:

Scorn correctly increases the armor gain from SF; it does not ignore the mod. Scorn is a separate modifier and does not add to SF. Basically, any armor amount you have before the Scorn buff is multiplied by the Scorn buff.

Ice Ward acts like another Steel Fiber mod, with an increase from power strength. At base strength, it's like a +150% SF mod; at max strength it's like a +426% SF mod. The effects of Ice Ward stacks additively with the Steel Fiber mod; A max strength Ice Ward on a Chroma with a maxxed out SF would give the Chroma +536% armor for a total of 2226 armor.

Did you ever find anything out about that 'Taking less damage without SF' Charger test? :S

I didn't test with power strength mods, there were already too many numbers, and I spent half of the day just handling them.

 

Regarding the "less damage", I updated that post with new video tests and everything looked fine from the second try, 6 damage with Steel Fiber and 8 without it. I don't know what caused that oddness.

 

Also, cold ward's reflected damage never was superior to the electric ward's. Besides, they seem to be conceptually different. Cold ward reflects ranged damage based on how much damage the attacking target deals, and Electric ward reflects damage based on how much damage you received. This means that with cold ward the reflected damage is the same regardless of whether it was reflected from health, or from shields, and with electric ward the damage reflected from shields is much higher than the damage reflected from health.

284% power strength - the same 208 reflected damage from cold ward. So, no. It only reflects 100% of incoming ranged damage.

I think it would be nice to point out that this isn't a guide for what is the best chroma element, but rather which element is the best for tanking. If health was what you were looking for, then this guide is for you. This guide does not seem to account for the other CC purposes of the elements which is fine since it was not the goal of the guide. That is not to say toxic or electric are bad, but they're not meant for tanking and offer Chroma alternative ways to play.

Quite true, thank you for understanding. :) I use electric myself when I'm doing Simaris scan runs and don't have to worry about killing the enemy myself. :P Never used toxin though.

what i was thinking....if u don't have room for a redirect or a vigor, couldu just bring along a large supply of shield ospreys? to get the maximum effect of vex armor? would that be a legit workaround?

personally i think those would be fine, but i'd personally rather bring a guardian sentinel or raksa/shield restores if necessary since you only need to lose 400 shields to get the maxed scorn value of your build. Then again, i'm not allied with suda

edit: btw anyone using chroma in the tactical alert? Ik blackout 3 gets heavy so i'm not expecting chroma in that (if anyone has managed to do it with chroma though, i request a video)

I find my carrier with guardian is all i need to get that 300 shields boost after i lose them and even when it doesn't refill, the normal shield regen is enough for me. But I guess ospreys would help if you really find shields lacking all the time.

 

All you need for this alert is a small room with one way out, and corrosive torid

 

Pretty much, did this with a slow nova and a trin, just 2 of us and I tipedo'd and trin used Torid while in the crate room. :)

So how much duration does everyone find to be effective for vex armor builds?

I find 40 seconds ( I think that's 160% in the ui (+60%) the minimum you want to aim for a frost or electric build while having power strength of 200% in the Ui (+100%). For fire shorter duration is not as big of a deal because of how elemental ward gives health and is useful to have that not on an overly long CD.

I personally think you'd be fine without vigor if you have a sentinel with guardian, a raksa kubrow, or a shield restore. TacticalPotato on youtube managed to stay in T4 survival for 40 minutes with ice chroma with intensify as the only strength mod. Assuming your steel fiber is maxed and that i did the math properly, i doubt a ~90% damage reduction with only maxed intensify on vex armor alone is anything laughable either

Wow, very impressive. I was wondering what if I ran Steel Fiber, Vigor and Vitality. Is that not good enough? I know the test is done with just a combo of 2 since the other slots are already taken.

 

As Vengeful already answered your query well, I'll just add that with Vigor the only advantages are that you won't have to depend on a Sentinel or shield recharge to get the max Scorn effect in one straight go. Also, your Effective health will be slightly higher by about 2000 HP.

 

Just take my Case 6 Alternate Version 4 and add about 2k HP to the Effective health and you will have numbers approximate to your build.

 

So for eg : for Heat it will go from 18.5 k to 20.5 k Effective Health.

 

I'd love to add that case in there but sadly there's literally no more space in that post and if I add anything the editor tells me 'Contect too long' lol. :P
