Aside from Umbra as they said, best to just watch loads of YouTube videos of frames you like the sound/look of, so you know what you want to play towards.

If one of those happens to have a prime version, then sure go for that straight. If it doesn't then either farm or buy the normal version.

What do you like about Excal? The martial swordplay theme? The fashion?

I suppose you could check out Baruuk for a kind of unarmed parallel to Excalibur, in terms of theme.

But is such personal preference with what 40 odd to choose from.

frame that best suits my playstyle

Okay ... what's your playstyle tho? 😛

There's multiple ways to use Excal / multiple aspects to his kit,
but no Frame will offer exactly the same, because what would be the point of that.

For abilities more or less similar to Slash Dash, you can look into e.g. Rhino / Revenant / Garuda,
those Frames can rush into the heat of battle and be sturdy enough to feel right at home there.

If you like to butter up enemies for an incoming assault with a quick bit of (Radial Blind / Howl) mass CC,
there's loads of options for that, just add some (or a lot, heh) Range to your build.

If you like the idea of radial damage but found Radial Javelin to be not so amazing in practice,
there's plenty of upgrades to be had on that front, especially "nukes" that ignore line of sight are worth looking into.

(A bunch of older Frames, like Volt / Frost / Oberon / Rhino / Mag / whatnot, actually combine mass CC and mass damage into one.)

For something akin to Exalted Blade, Baruuk (as mentioned above) gets the closest, punches extended in range with shockwaves, neato.
There's also ability weapons that aren't full weapons but just (good) one-trick ponies, Khora and Atlas spamming their respective 1 can be fun indeed.

Basically, try out any Frame that seems even remotely interesting to you, even if it might mean changing your playstyle,
that's hardly the worst, diversity keeps the game from getting stale all too quickly.

I like being up close and personal

Few frames are as up-close-and-personal as Atlas.  90% of your time with him will be spent using his 1st ability to be invincible while you punch holes in your enemies.

Valkyr is another good option, as building her around her 4th ability means being invincible and slashing enemies to pieces with your claws.  She can also pull enemies to her with her 1st ability to get them nice and close.

You may also like Garuda, who can dive towards enemies to shred them with her claws using her 1st ability.  She can also use this ability to make an invincible shield, but it only guards from a single direction at a time so she lacks outright invincibility like the previous two.  But she does end up covered in her opponents' blood, which some might consider more personal.

WYM by unarmed parallel to Excailbur

Oh, I mean kind of analagous "light side" theme, an unarmed exalted weapon instead of a sword, some aoe cc (lull ~ radial blind), radial mini daggers instead of radial javelin (this one is kind of a stretch, thinking more in terms of loose theme and visual connection).

But didn't know what you wanted for playstyle - now you mention up close and personal, assuming melee - tbh there's so many possibilities here, even things like Banshee.
