New Hud Feedback

I'm quoting what i said here, and will add details.

"- it (the HUD) lacks their energy pool/ an indication when they have less than X% of ammo

- it lacks what warframe they are using + their sentinel
- i don't care of their avatars (plus, they are confusing with what warframe they are using), but their rank is useful to know if they "know" the gameplay
- i dream of when the reviving progression will be green instead of red
- i suggest each player to have a letter associated (A, B, C, D) (or a number) which will be displayed as/in/on their marker on the map. Like this, we'd know who's in which direction, we can identify them quickly, + we'd know who's the host (player A or 1)
- i suggest that crucial information appears in the main HUD, and then more details appear when we use "W" (the screen of our consumable gears, which would become and advanced interface (with all our loot for the mission, stats, a quick way to see friends connected/PM them, rank of our gear+XP bar, etc)"

I thought of this "advanced interface" a long time ago, but never took the time for making a thread about it.
The principle is simple: we have the common HUD, and then when we press "W" (or whatever key to see/use our consumables), we'd have an advanced interface with non-vital informations, but still useful).
This operation would allow to relieve the main HUD, and still being able to access to detailed infos (stats of the mission/resources earned, squad allies ID/rank/gear), useful tools (quickly PM our connected friends/use our consumables)
We can imagine this advanced interface would also be a place to manage our sentinel/pet (order them to stop their attacks (only their special ability), or disband them for a period, heal/revive them...

That's it for the concept.

Kind of surprised to see people posting here haven't figured out what the dots on the reticle are for(hint: it tells you if you have enough energy or not). That maybe needs to be explained somewhere in-game.

I'd like to second the thing about changing the color of the revival icon. When there's any sort of enemy sense/sonar going on, it's far too easy to lose the map marker for a downed ally in the sea of red enemies.

Also, I'm not a big fan of the current icon used for the loot radar. It's less than intuitive, and the coloration+shape makes it look like part of a level's architecture. Perhaps going back to the yellow would help, with an icon that looks less like a room/vent? It doesn't feel as helpful as it used to be.

There is only one thing that really bothers me with the new HUD (otherwise it's pretty cool): My health and shield are *still*
displayed at the top right corner of my screen (and the energy at the lower right corner), which means that while I'm inside of an intense firefight, they're completely useless (I play on a 24" screen with 1920x1080): The millisecond delay that naturally happens when I shift my focus to the health/shield/energy level (of myself or my teammates) and process the numbers in my head while shifting my attention back to the center of the screen is enough so that I can miss something and get myself - or worse, a teammate - killed (especially on higher difficulty missions). This might not be a problem for smaller screen sizes, but 24" is not so uncommon anymore that you can just ignore it.
The solution - as done by many FPS games in the past - is moving these elements (health, shield, and energy level) to the horizontal center of the screen. It doesn't even matter if it's at the top, the bottom, or even around the targeting circle, but it has to be at - or at the very least extremely near - the horizontal center to accommodate widescreens. It doesn't even have to be fixed, you could just make it movable or only available as a toggle option, so people who prefer these elements where the are right now can keep them there, but it really must happen. Because with the way things are now, I can only check my health/shield/energy level while not inside a firefight (usually right before and right after) which is pretty unsafe, but at least doesn't give me a performance drop.

I really like this game, please make this happen.

Logged into Warframe for the first time in a long time, I am impressed!

I notice that Warframe now runs at wider resolutions than 4k, but the HUD enveloping box stays up against the lefthand side (and is limited to about 4k wide) O_o

My one point of feedback - The HUD margin adjustment is great - you just need to have an offset as well - so that we can shift the HUD 'box' centre around, not just changing its width and height.

If you do this - BAM KAPOW! Eyefinity/surround users will be very happy!

As a 3 month player I ended up here to finally figure out what the 4 dots under the targeting reticule were. None of the people I asked knew. I went thru the tutorial, read the PC start guide a couple of times. Noted the four dots changed but never figured it out. It is not often that I play a Warframe with all 4 given skills. I usually swap for something else.

I would like to see my energy display replace that. I do not like it being in the lower right on either a 17" display or 27" display.

Thanks Still enjoying the game and understand that Early Access means it is a work in progress.

This game desperately needs a customize ui system especially when it comes to scaling the size of the elements since I have trouble seeing the small things in corner often. It would be a good idea to use lotro's option where you presss a key combination lets you move all aspects of your hud all you want, either that or an option for a minimalist hud/Center of screen HUD like the planetside 2 one.

still think the UI should eventually be moddable like WOW is with lua scripting, some people here could produce some really good results.

nothing made me happier than making my own nameplate/ui mods for wow for myself/clan members, do/show things the way you wanted.

DE! Please please tell me this will be fixed with the new UI. Puh-Leeeez! This has been a problem since the arsenal adopted this particular UI.

On resolutions beyond 1080p, the UI is horribly scrunched around the Warframe/character. My resolution is 2560x1600 (1600p)

U14 looks to be a great improvement to user interface, and it got me to thinking, what else could we do? The first time was the solar map remake, the ring to which all planets are placed may be overcrowded once players open up more planets, could we separate the rings into areas? Or allow the player to see the maps in different ways? Maybe something like a map option that shows all the planets controlled by one faction or another (or majority controlled by that faction since the Corpus and the Grineer like to go at it a lot). Or separation by the inner solar system, and the outer solar system, that way the ring isn't crowded with so many planets at once. Also, the following may be an idea to be thought of in advancing the navigation. I've seen how the different nodes are selected in the planet you are currently viewing, and it is a grand step forward, but it also got me to thinking, what else could be done?

You’ve talked about making immersion very important with the new diagetic UI, and something to help with the new navigation is not only having the rings appear when the players select it, but also, as our heads now have movement pertaining to the position of the cursor, allow the Tenno that the player is using physically touch on the planet that the player has selected. Also, when a player wishes to rotate the ring of planets, to have the Tenno on screen slide his/her hands left or right, to show the ring moving in the direction that the player wishes it to go. Once you select a planet, the Tenno touches the planet, and the screen zooms in on said planet. Now, we move on to how node selection could be improved in coming updates.

One option could be that you could put the mission nodes on the planet, have it highlight a certain area of the planet, and when you select the mission, you can zoom in on that spot to see a Corpus compound or a Grineer installation to which you could storm, a visual representation of the structure or area or citadel to which you are attacking. Once you click “play now” you can see a Tenno Lissette zipping towards the compound. If you’re in a group, then more Lisette’s going towards the compound corresponding to how many people are in the group. When the node is selected, you could also have the Lotus speaking on what kind of mission it would be, like how she does when you enter the mission. Her dialogue could reveal the background of the mission, and also the Boss to whom the planet corresponds and why the Boss wants that node for their faction.

For the space missions, you could zoom in on the ship that you're about to attack, a miniature of it, floating in space. When you select that space mission, it shows your Tenno Ship dropping out of hyper space (or however they travel) near the ships area. And once the node is ready and the player clicks "play now" a little Lissette could be seen flying toward the Corpus, Grinner, Orokin, or Infested ship. When you drop out of hyper space (or after the mission) you can see the ship you just stormed in the distance from your main ship. On the topic of this, when a node is in conflict, could something be done like showing two of the ships battle each other in space, or the Corpus and Grineer fleets fighting one another . And if you slide your cursor over a Corpus ship and select it, it'll highlight the ship and Alad V (or whomever is the Corpus Boss on the planet, or invading Grineer leader (Grineer leader could be the closest Grineer Boss to that planet) grudgingly ask the Tenno for assistance in the conflict). You have something like this map in the Corpus ships during the node conflicts between the factions, its sitting in the Barracks area or something. But it shouldn’t be just that hologram representation, more fleshed out and actually showing ships in real time attacking one another. Once selected, your Lissette could be seen dropping out of hyper space and outside of your Lissette window the battle transpiring.

The same principle of selecting the ships applies in this situation. When the player clicks on either the Corpus or Grineer ship, the Tenno themselves touch the ship to begin the transmission.

Alad V:

“Tenno, I know we have had differences in the past. Different interests in profits and such, what with you trying to kill me and all and me butchering your friends, but the Grineer threaten both our profits. Help me hold this position, and I will reward you for it. Oh, and I promise, Zanuka will play nice the next time I let her go on a…walk.”

Sargus Ruk:

“Tennnno… you have helped the Grineer before….. against Alad…. V. Gravitus was a way for you to….. reclaim your bretheren…. Assist me and my bretheren against these Corpus machines….. and we will pay you handsomely for your efforts…. The Sisters asked for your “help”….personally.”

After you hear the Dialogue of one or the other, or both, the Lotus might wanna put in her two cents. (Dialogue could tie in with the alignment system you guys were talking about a few streams back)

Lotus:

“The choice is yours, Tenno. Help [Planetary Boss] hold this position, and the [insert Home Faction Name Here] will continue to have possession of [insert Planet Name Here]. If you assist [invading Boss] against [Planetary Boss] the [invading Faction Name Here] will gain a strategic foothold on [Planet in Dispute Name Here].”

The same approach could be used with the Dark Sector conflicts. Once the DS comes under conflict, show the two Solar Rails in front of the Tenno in his/her navigational layout, and Tenno Lissette slipstreams (jet/exhaust trails?) going back and forth between the rails, and explosions around the rails. Again, selecting one rail or another would envoke the warlord/tactician of that rail to ask for your assistance in this fight. Once you’ve chosen your side, you could zoom in on where the new pvp setup would be, and select the match to join it, or if you’re one of the persons that like to do the mobile defense (or if a pvp match is unavailable), you can select the mobile defense option.

Yup, that’s all I can think of right now. Aloha from Hawai’i, I do hope you read this and that my suggestions were useful.

Agreed, it would be great if the hud was more flexible. I would really like to move my mini map, health/shields,  and abilities to where ever I want on the screen. This would really help solve most of this issues with the hud everyone would be happy with their own hud set up.

I doubt it, Pablo and Dorian only test 1080p and lower it seems from the interview, they seem to think PC gamers at best have 1080p, they don't take 1920x1200, 2560x1400, 2560x1600 and higher into account, there are 4k monitors coming out recently. And I don't think WF supports surround/eyefinity (like my 5760x1080 setup).

I hope they add something around the cursor / weapon targetting thing so that you can see your shield and health without having to look away, and more noticability when you are low on shields or health. Also, it would be nice if our teammate's health bar flash when they are low on health. It would be also nice if the amount of health that determines when their health bar flashes scales with enemy levels.

  • 2 weeks later...

I understand that a LOT of work has gone into the new interface, and don't get me wrong it looks very beautiful and is wonderful scenery porn, but, somewhere along the lines someone has forgotten the basics of a menu system;  That is to be quickly and easily navigable by your end user.  Sure, we will all get used to it along the lines, but being unable to see an entire menu at once and having to physically move your mouse side to side is rather jarring (the mod screen is a good example, and bear in mind I'm on a laptop running the game in 1280x768 resolution).  While I'm ranting about menu's, the mission menu has become a lot harder to navigate now that all the planets are the same size (also I would love to see in the planet hover popup the number of missions completed/not completed).  Having them different sizes was a very useful way of quickly identifying different regions of the screen visually and being able to focus your attention.  For those of us who are visually impared, picking by planet colour is now much harder than by other means (and yes I realise we can hover over the planets to see the name but this essentially turns into a game of hide and seek when you have to hover over each one to find what you want).

I have to agree with this. I've been playing since update 8 or 9, and this new menu setup is a complete mess. nothing is clear, nothing is easy to find, please please please tell me there will be an option at some point to go back to a simple clean navigation.

I'm not saying this is a game killer, but it sure feels close.

I feel we've taken one step forwards in looks and 2 back in usability, we need the option at least to not have to move the cursor to look around our warframe, basically "zoom out" a bit to make all of the UI visible at once, and an option to not make the UI rock around as you move the cursor would also be nice, it's very jarring.

The new planet selection UI is pretty annoying to use, the planets are only labeled when selected and they're not all distinct enough (especially from the dark side) to tell them apart, permanent labels would be a lot nicer and reduce the guesswork and hunt to find what you want aspect of the current system, the mission selection screen is even worse though, the mission names are there all the time, but they're drawn on a circle around the planet, making some of the text sideways, some of it upside-down, this is a big no-no, new style is a lot nicer looking than the old one but it's a lot less functional, it takes me a lot longer to find the mission I want and start it.

Both the planets and mission UIs suffer from a pretty console:ish feel, I can't just look over my options at a glance and click what I want, I need to cycle through them using a d-pad or similar to figure out what they are then pick one.

If the planets didn't cycle around in a circle but instead just sat still in that circle and we could use the mouse to click the one we want would be a lot easier to use.

The esc menu has a lot of nesting that doesn't make sense or is annoying, would be nicer if instead of huge buttons for each nested segment it fit each individual element into the menu on it's own without the nesting.

Great job on the work for this update 14, everything is great.

But there's a few little problems that irritates me a little :)

1. I am used to having a wide field of view while in mission, is it possible to have the field of view settings to work in ships too? cause everything looks really cramp.

2. The floating little icons above the planets in the navigation is sometimes hard to focus at if a bright star happens to be infront of the ship making everything at the front of the ship to glow bright white. can there be a "drop shadow" kind of thing for it too? cause as the icons are white, and i happen to have a white coloured warframe which just blends in, so i couldnt really see anything.

3. Also, can the main mission have a more distinct standout icon, for example red colour? cause when i started the prologue, i didnt really know which icon to follow.

4. maybe linked to point 1, while viewing the foundary/mods, if we were to point at the right columm, i cant see part of the left columm, though it is cool. it also a tiny bit irritating to keep hovering left and right so much. Maybe just have it sway a little but keeping a full view of the page. or maybe just for players own setting, the wide view is needed. :D

5. And the interation button font is a little bit too small , the "pick up floor item" thing and some other of the same function like the press X to interact with the security panel thing  ? i forgot what is that.  lul
