Any good way to avoid getting hooked by Ancients?

There's quite a lot of ways.

Block with melee, using Atlas, step to a side. Or ignoring hooks at all equipping Handspring.

power drift has a 15% chance of stopping knockdown..and easy to get...and it seems to trigger quite often.

even a 1 or 2 rank Handspring can help.

Tap shift to roll in any direction.

Set a hotkey for Roll. It's invaluable.

Other methods can help but are not 100% effective.

Ancient's Hook attack uses movement prediction which is strange to try and dodge through movement, esp at closer range.

You can also use a melee weapon which has momentum like most Heavy weapons and Dual Swords. This will stop things from interrupting you mid combo.

Block is nice if you're melee-out. Otherwise dodging; usually I just get hooked and shoot em in the face when I'm close. They never learn that they really don't want me close to them.

I believe you are also immune to knockdowns during slide attack animations.

Use heavy weapons. Heavy weapons have momentum and inertia that cannot be interrupted by hooks. Prisma Dual Cleavers also have the "heavy weapon" property to them despite being twin blades.

(and technically being inside of Frost's Snow Globe with the Ancient/Scorpion outside will block it as well. Same goes for Volt's Electric Shield.)

Personally, I can't live without the handspring mod.  You get pulled maybe 1m to 2m and you'll hop right back up.  It nullifies Ancient and Scorpion pulls entirely, and it also works against blast procs.  And as a bonus, I also love the animation that plays for the handspring mod, it makes me feel a little more like a space ninja.

Handspring is a great mod.

I try to fit it in on Excal whenever I can and even though Valkyr doesn't really need it, putting it on her is amazingly entertaining, haha.

The Frames with powers that more or less let them ignore the effect don't really need it though (those I listed above).
