Xbox bought Bethesda

Am I the only one who thinks this might help with Bethesda's recent problem of "We have no idea what we're doing?".

I know I know, Microbucks doesn't have a good rep, but honestly Bethesda needs...something to keep them on track so we don't have another 76 moment.

Absolutely. Bethesda has been going in a very anti-consumer direction. So for them to be picked up by Xbox is huge.

Can we talk about how bad of a timeline we're in when getting picked up by Micro$oft can be considered a good thing?

As I said in another forum, I just hope this leads to some shake-up in Bethesda's leadership. They used to be this quirky bunch you couldn't get too mad at for their infamous technical fumbles, because they had ambition, made games other publishers wouldn't touch, and do it with a bit of can-do heart. But their recent output such as Wolfenstein: Youngblood, Fallout 76, The Elder Scrolls: Blades and others have damaged their reputation in my eyes.

Now they've become this buggy, messy, microtransaction-laden plop peddlers, and I treat their new releases with suspicion. Doom Eternal has refilled the redemption beaker a little, but even that whiffs of live service and microtransaction nonsense when you're not focusing your eyes on the good bits, as if they're gritting their teeth behind their smiles lest we flay them alive again for being as crappy as we know they can be.

Alas, I hope for, but do not expect that shake-up. What this is really all about is Gamepass stuffing, Microsoft will honour current agreements, and we won't see Xbox-exclusive Bethesda games for a few years, and they might be only timed exclusives. Starfield is 50/50, while TES6 is definitely going exclusive.

People are already calling for Fallout: New Vegas 2 developed by Obsidian, another Microsoft acquisition, but I don't see that happening. Microsoft tend to like specialisation; 343 does Halo, Coalition does Gears, Turn 10 does Forza Motorsport, etc. I expect them to be very cautious about any possible collaboration; maybe a little of consulting and temporary assistance at most. Personally, if Microsoft want to be bold, they could cancel Avowed and have Obsidian do TES6 while Bethesda focus on Starfield, but again, I find that very unlikely.

Any major company pickup can be a good thing, as well as a bad thing.

EA is legendary for screwing up studios they pick up, but Respawn Entertainment's managing to do pretty well after a rocky start with Titanfall. Even then, the Titanfall IP (if not the main series games) is doing better than ever thanks to Apex.

I think it's less "don't know what they are doing" and more "we are lazy and will recycle everything. Same game, different name. Like WWE or FIFA".

This might make them actually improve the engine or actually try to make new things instead of re-using assets for a "new game".

God, Failout 76 was a mess...
