Dearest Tenno,

As we welcome the month of August, we reflect on our last Dev Workshop post about the plan for The War Within. It’s clear that we were (and continue to be) very ambitious and dedicated about The War Within and everything it contains. If you watched today’s Devstream you may already be aware of the change in plans we have for the final installment. If you had missed it or were looking for more information let’s take a look back at what has been released thus far.

You may remember [DE]Steve’s post 'The War Within: Less wait, more update!'  back in early June where it was announced how we’d be approaching The War Within Update – In chunks! The motivation behind this decision was to continue to bring you quality content without drowning out non-headlining features and additions to the game. It would also give us time to work more diligently, deliver more goodness, and expose less bugs. What came from this decision was a 3 part segmented update, each piece with its own focus. To date we have kept to the original plan of splicing The War Within into three parts:

  • Part I: Lunaro was released June 15th on PC and July 7th on PS4/XB1 and brought Lunaro, a friendlier and more team driven Conclave mode, to Warframe.
  • Part II: Specters of the Rail was released July 8th (soon to be in certification for consoles) and breathed new life into the Star Chart with a redesign and introduction to Junction link travel. The update also brought Void 2.0, Market and Archwing overhauls, Kavat companions, and much more.
  • Part III: The War Within was intended on being the last update of the trilogy with the next cinematic quest unfolding more of the Warframe universe. The update was planned to also reveal more about the Grineer Queens, Teshin, and you, the Tenno.

With Parts I and II out the door we can reflect on the lessons learned from these updates - mainly Specters of the Rail which brought some massive quality of life fixes and much needed overhauls to Warframe. These long anticipated and discussed features were so well received by you guys in the community we couldn’t help but mirror the excitement. With the desire to get the update in your hands as soon as possible, we rushed its deployment. Unfortunately, the timing of Specters of the Rail collided with our first ever Warframe Convention “TennoCon,” and it showed. The update was deployed Friday July 8th, a day before the convention where DE staff and developers would be out of office and present for panels, activities, and meeting all of you who attended. A relatively empty office and busy day at the convention meant that the update suffered and was neglected the quality it deserved upon release.

The continued endeavor to get The War Within out while not allowing history to repeat itself has lead us to where we are now:

Part III: The War Within is being split into 2 parts. Part III: Titania and her quest which will be coming this August on PC, and Part IV:The War Within update with cinematic quest will be released afterwards.

Our decision to split Part III (now Part III and IV) comes purely from a ‘what you rush you regret’ state of mind. We’re always trying set the bar higher from update to update. We have high hopes that the War Within quest will do just that, given the split and added time this grants us to expand on ideas and develop them into realities.

It’s always our goal to give you the most exciting update possible - we take risks. We learned the hard way what happens when you rush incubation with an egg that is not ready to be hatched.

We can’t thank you enough for all your patience and support as we crunch away at The War Within. We want you to be proud of The War Within cinematic quest and deliver The Second Dream feels all over again x 9000.

Get ready for Titania and much more coming this August, Tenno!!

if the 2nd part of war within comes on september the 6th I cry for the awesome birthday gift :o

Players should be required to do the junctions If they don't want to , To me mandatory completion of these junctions is nothing more than a hindrance.

(I think the completion of the junctions should be completely optional for those players that want to try them)  This is my Idea for the junctions come the next update.

At least Veterans should have all the requirements automatically completed, especially if they've complete the whole system or at the very least completed the Second Dream.

I am looking forward to seeing some real changes to the gameplay model, so I'm hoping to see this update through before too long.  I'm beginning to think that there are more problems with the game at the core than just damage numbers or content scarcity can account for.  At this point I don't care about whatever this update cluster will bring nearly as much as I look forward to it no longer putting blinders on developers.

Yes, we've been happy with much of what we have gotten and with what's occurred, but our concerns over specific issues have been largely ignored in favor of "The War Within".  I'm hoping that the title doesn't become become prophetic, as I've seen divides opening and widening between members of the community and developers.  Yes, I am thinking about the Volt debacle, but also about growing sentiment reguarding cheap enemy tactics and Warframe marginalization in general.

I think the most central point is this:  infinite meaningless enemies are infinitely meaningless.  We need some kind of reason for slaughtering more Corpus or Grineer, not just more bodies to pile up.  We need smarter enemies that are more of a challenge to fight, not unstoppable whipcord salvos or rooms so full of Nullifiers that the entire space might as well be a Formorian reactor room.  And for God's sake we DO NOT NEED caustic eyebiting searing visual effects from the game.  I don't fight Corpus anymore because of physical pain (and Nullifiers make me physically violent).

I'm not looking forward to anything you're doing with this eventual release because of anything it is or contains, but because of the fact that Devs will be able to spend time looking at more pressing problems than how to make some sort of generic forced moral delimma seem relevant when the player base will just say "what's in it for me?"  Yeah, I'm makin a silly assumption there, but it's just how things have played out so far.

I'm pretty much at burnout, so understand that I'm not even trying to be salty anymore.  This is just honest thought, such as my caffeine-deprived mind can formulate right now.  You guys have the most goddamn irritating habit of pulling the rabbit outta any hat you're handed, so I assume you'll pull me back in eventually.  I just hope we see some more changes for the better soon.

(P.S., If you want to wade through the Volt Feedback thread you'll find some good ideas and solid points, and also some interesting observations about gameplay for squishy 'Frames.  Heck, I just assume SOMEONE should read that thread, because as a whole it made conclusions that are not what your official stance says they are or should be.  The community spoke, but were treated as if they didn't know what they were saying.  Not a good feeling.)

What exactly is a junction?

Basically a replacement for the Nav Segments. In SotR (now in cert for XB1 and PS4), the solar map is laid out much more intuitively, with each planet unlocked by a junction in a specific order (more or less). Each junction has 4 tasks, which will usually be completed just by clearing the nodes on that planet, though there are also things such as crafting a weapon or killing a certain number of specific units.

It's mainly an effort to make the game more friendly to new players, giving them a sense of direction and knowing what to do to progress, though there is still much to be done in other areas of the new player experience.

Your face when DE later announces the update is postponed...and will be a Hexalogy:

All ribbing aside, I'm casual for life. Ain't even started on the Inaros quest or finished the Jordas/Atlas quest.

Learn from the SotR update, take your time, do the update justice, and the community proud, DE.

This is how I am when I get on the forums. I login, see if updated, logout. I really would like to have it so we can play quests repeated so that we can have something to do. (Like go through all of them to get up to second dream and War within).

It's ok. I don't mind waiting. I waited for Kavats for a Long LONG &#! time. I can wait for a new frame and quest.
